General Summer Safety
With summertime fast approaching, New Castle Pediatrics wants to remind everyone of some basic summer safety tips to keep your kids safe and healthy this summer.
Use Sunscreen
Always use sunscreen on children 6 months and older every time they will be in the sun, at least spf 15. Make sure you reapply often, especially after swimming. For children less than 6 months avoid direct sun exposure especially during peak hours and contact your doctor about safe products.
Use Bug Spray
The most effective bug repellent is DEET. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that the product contain no more than 30% DEET and not be mixed with sunscreen. DEET containing products should not be used in children less than 2 months old. Natural alternatives include eucalyptus, citronella, soybean and cedar but these are much less effective and need to be reapplied more often. Avoidance of peak bug hours and light weight long sleeved, long legged clothing is also recommended.
Use Caution In And Around Water
Children should always be supervised by an adult when in or around water. Even small amounts of water like car washing buckets can be enough to drown a child. Fun flotation devices like water wings and kick boards and even approved flotation devices like life jackets do NOT substitute for adult supervision.
Stay Hydrated
Warm temperatures deplete our bodies of needed fluids much faster than cool temperatures. Make sure your children are drinking plenty of fluids on hot days when they are outside. Good fluids include water and low sugar sports replacement drinks. Drinks that contain caffeine are not recommended for hydration.
Have a safe and happy summer!
